I’m so in love with patterns, I cannot even explain how much I enjoy it when I’m creating a new pattern – it fills my heart and soul.
Being a surface-pattern designer is my dream. Well, I believe I’m a surface-pattern designer already, but I would love to do it for a living.
If you want to know more about it, let me start with what surface design is!
The Surface Design Association describes it like this: “Surface design encompasses the coloring, pattering, and structuring of fiber and fabric. This involves creative exploration of processes such as dyeing, painting, printing, stitching, embellishing, quilting, weaving, knitting, felting, and paper making.”
Surface designs are everywhere! If you can imagine it, you can create a surface design for it! The sky is the limit, and that’s one of the things that I love most about it. I love to create beautiful things; I love imagining home décor, garden décor, clothing, handbags, candles, even furniture with my designs, and then creating them!
So what do you need to be an awesome surface-pattern designer? In my personal opinion you need to be passion about it. Everybody begins at the starting line, but it depends how much you love what you are doing, to determine how far you’ll get in your career.
I have seen people that specifically studied surface-pattern design make it big, and I have seen people that are self-taught make it big too!
So here I am, in love with surface-pattern design, not even close to getting a job as a pattern designer… so what is my plan? Well… my plan is to create beautiful patterns, love what I do, be passionate about it, continue spreading my love about surface-pattern design, and share my designs in my shops- Society6, Zazzle, and Threadess, currently.
And maybe some day, not far away, I’ll have the courage to be part of Surtex or just take the leap and start sending my portfolio out looking to get my designs licensed.
So in the meantime, share the journey with me and wish me luck!
This are some of my pattern designs 🙂
